The Art of the Bricks – LEGO bricks, that is.
OMSI’s new exhibit opened this past weekend, The Art of the Brick by artist Nathan Sawaya. This is said to be the world’s largest display of LEGO art ever and features original pieces from the artist as well as re-imagined versions of some of world’s most famous art masterpieces made exclusively from LEGO bricks.
I went with the mindset that this was a going to be a fun exhibit for my kids (and it was!) not expecting to be equally impressed by his art and story. His reproductions of famous well known paintings and sculptures were entertaining to compare but what I appreciated most was of his original pieces and collaboration with photographer Dean West. In these photographs highly stylized representations of contemporary life are portrayed with pieces of everyday objects, created by Nathan, scattered through them.
At the end of the exhibit there is the obligatory room of LEGOs for the kids to play and build sculptors of their own while as an adult you realize these little bricks are so much more than they seem.
