ASTORIA - Not everything’s about Portland
As an Oregonian transplant from the East coast, my knowledge of Oregon history doesn’t go much further beyond your basic Lewis & Clark required high school history class reading. It was with hesitation I attended the Portland Center Stage’s (aka The Armory) world premiere of ASTORIA, Part 1.
ASTORIA, the play, is an adaptation of the best-selling book by Peter Stark, retelling the harrowing dual journey – one over land, one by sea. I was pleasantly surprised how cohesively they were able retell the two journeys. Even though you obviously know that they will make it to Astoria, the play keeps you on the edge of your seat for the full three hours (yes, 3 hours). The cast of sixteen do a great job with bringing each of the characters to life, that finds you rooting for some and mourning others. Most of all – I learned more than I expected and was left with a rewarding evening out.
Look forward to the conclusion next season with ASTORIA, Part 2.
